Reports confirm that undercover NYPD cops shot and killed an alleged teen gunman in Brooklyn on Saturday, March 9. Officers claim that when an unmarked anti-crime patrol car passed by a group of male teenagers in East Flatbush on Saturday night, 16-year-old Kimani Gray began acting suspicious while adjusting his waistband. The young man then allegedly pulled out a .357 caliber gun and pointed it right at the policemen. The officers quickly responded by opening fire, although several eyewitnesses insist that Gray was not acting hostile in any way. The boy was shot in the leg and stomach and promptly transferred to the Kings County Hospital, where he later died from his gun wounds.
According to several reports, two NYPD officers were cruising around Brooklyn in an unmarked anti-crime patrol vehicle late Saturday evening at approximately 11:25 p.m. They happened to pass by a group of six young men, and noticed Gray separate himself from the pack and begin fidgeting with his waistband. When the two cops parked the car and attempted to approach Gray to see what was going on, the teen allegedly pulled out a gun on them. Police confirm that in response, the two officers fired at the suspect, hitting him in several places on his torso and legs. Gray was rushed to the local Kings County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Several witnesses could not explain what exactly caused the officers to open fire, but still insist that Gray had done nothing wrong. His friend Devonte Brown told the New York Post, "As the cops opened fire, he was screaming, 'Stop! I'm not running!'"
Gray's uncle, 65-year-old Cecil Nunes, said the teen and his out-of-work mother, Carol, had just moved back to the East Flatbush area from Crown Heights. "I don't what he was up to last night. I don't know what happened," a shaken-up Nunes said. "He was respectful, but a typical teenager. I have to ask myself why this happened. Why, why, why."
Sources confirm that young Gray had a previous criminal record, including charges for breaking into a car, possession of stolen property, grand larceny, and rioting.
Police say Gray's gun was loaded with four bullets, but it remains unknown if the teenager actually fired his weapon.
Gray's mother Carol was hospitalized after hearing of her son's death - she was released on Sunday morning.
According to police, an investigation is still ongoing.
