A California man has been arrested after allegedly poisoning his girlfriend using Visine drops. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office arrested the 27-year-old Shayne Carpenter for reportedly putting eye drops in his girlfriend's drink. Luckily, the girlfriend is expected to make a full recovery after suffering from Visine poisoning.
Carpenter is being charged with domestic violence after being caught in Grass Valley, California. According to reports the couple got into a fight and Carpenter put the Visine drops in her drink. After she became ill, the woman found texts on Carpenter's phone that made her suspicious.
Nevada County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Tripp told ABC News affiliate KXTV, "He was making texts to his buddies that if 'She's going to be talking crap then she's going to be crapping."
An ingredient found in Visine drops and other eye drops called, Tetrahydrozoline, can allegedly cause some health problems if ingested. Some symptoms are vomiting, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing.
As a result, people like Caprenter have tried to use Visine to poison people. A Pennsylvania woman reportedly tried to use Visine to slowly poison her boyfriend over three years. According to a report by ABC News back in August, the 33-year-old woman could be spending her life in prison. She was charged with 10 counts of aggravated assault, 10 counts of simple assault and 10 counts of reckless endangerment.
The PA woman has a child with her 45-year-old boyfriend and she told Pennsylvania State Police that she put Visine drops into his drinking water 10 to 12 times since June 2009. The boyfriend had been sick for years with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, blood pressure and breathing problems. Once his doctor found traces of Tetrahydrozoline in his blood tests, he alerted authorities.
Shayne Carpenter, the 33-year-old California man, admitted to the poisoning of his girlfriend over the phone and was released on $25,000 bail on Friday.
