As The Office and Derek creator Ricky Gervais gears up for what will be his fourth time hosting the Golden Globes, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him to discuss what could go down this coming Jan. 10. And despite some jokes he's already written – not all of which he can use – Gervais admits that his main goal is to please the at-home audience, and not so much the celebrities in the crowd.
"There's nothing in it for them, they're not winning awards," Gervais says of the viewers watching at home. Because of that, the comedian admits to trying to make the gig a "spectator sport," without undermining "the moral fabric of America."
Gervais' performances at the Golden Globes have always been met with contention, as he seemingly rips apart the audience in attendance. It's something the follows him to this very day, something he doesn't quite seem to grasp.
"It's a strange myth that follows me around that I'm a shock comedian."
Shock aside, his intentions are never to offend the celebs in the crowd. Despite taking some jabs here and there – okay, a lot – Gervais admits that a large majority of it is an act, much of it is him pretending to have, as he calls it, "swagger."
I just wrote a joke for the Globes that's so good I don't even care about the ridiculous amount of heat it's going to draw. All good fun.

The Golden Globes are set to air on NBC this coming Jan. 10, 2016.
Folks, will you be watching?
I've written 9 jokes for the Golden Globes. Sober, I'd be brave enough to do 6 of them. Luckily, I have a solution. pic.twitter.com/0ZEwer5efZ — Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) December 4, 2015© 2024 Mstars News, All rights reserved. Do not reproduce without permission.
