Last week's episode of The Following brought a lot of huge plot points into the mix. Entitle "Let Me Go," the first season's seventh episode has refused to release the viewer from its grasp as the main antagonist, Joe Carroll, announced to special agent Ryan Hardy that this is only the beginning, despite countless deaths and setbacks. A suspenseful closing scene only allows us to ask more and more questions as FOX's highest rated television show comes back tonight with episode 8: "Welcome Home." (SPOILERS to follow)
In order to catch you up before tonight's epic continuation of Joe Carroll's next "novel," let's just come right out and say that everything is basically falling apart for the FBI and Ryan Hardy. After Carroll gets his attorney, Olivia Warren, to ensure his transfer to another prison, it seems pretty obvious that he will attempt to escape. Hardy and Weston are on the case though, which gives the viewer a great fact-to-face conversation between the show's biggest stars. The transfer is in fact just a ploy for an escape (thanks to a blackmailed warden and his kidnapped daughter), and America's most dangerous serial killer is on the lose again. He doesn't even thank his accomplice, Olivia, properly. Instead he strangles her to death (in an amazing performance by an otherwise subdued James Purefoy) while she is on the phone with Hardy. They track Carroll into a business center where the murderer is met by more followers who eventually help him escape via helicopter. Hardy has his arm broken in the process and shoots breathlessly at the escaping helicopter.
We also see Carroll's son, Joey, meeting up with more "followers" after an intense few hours in a repair garage with Emma and the mysterious Bo, who is not a follower. Emma distrusts him for this and in the end Charles (creepiest dude) "takes care" of him. Charles then escorts Emma and Joey to the next location: a reclusive estate full of the other "cult" members.
Joe pulls up to the mansion and is greeted by his "family," embracing Emma who is in a state of nirvana at this point. Also, Joe finally gets to see his son, Joey.
Tonight's episode is definitely going to be intense considering the ball is now in Carroll's court.
