The cult classic, Dirty Dancing, is getting a remake - a three hour musical one, to be precise. The first details of the special are leaking out, but several big questions remain. Here, we unpack the top three questions we have about ABC's latest musical venture. First, let's talk about what we know so far. Earlier this week, ABC announced that Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens, Little Miss Sunshine) will play the starring role of Baby, played by Jennifer Grey in the original.
The show will be 3 hours long, and Jessica Sharzer (The L Word) is set to write the adaptation, with the music being done by Glee alums Peer Astrom and Adam Anders. Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton) is the choreographer.
So, with all of that in mind, we'd really like to know:
1. Who Will Be Patrick Swayze's Johnny?
They've given us Baby, but absolutely no word on who will take on the role of tough guy, dance instructor Johnny. Whoever he is, he absolutely must be able to dance. Swayze was trained in dance long before he got the original role and mystery guy should be, too.
2. How Will it be THREE Hours?
Three hours is a long time for most plots. Dirty Dancing isn't exactly a complicated plot, either. Early reports are saying that the musical will follow the same plot as the movie, but if that's the case, it should be an hour and a half, maybe two hours long, tops. This should be very interesting indeed.
3. Will the Famous Lift Be Involved?
With any recreation comes new additions and sometimes, things get left out in the name of keeping things fresh. Hopefully, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler keeps the penultimate moment of the film intact for the musical. Because let's be honest, that gorgeous lift is the part of the movie we come back for time and time again.
