The New York Yankees have been compared to a lot of things, but this is the first time I have heard this comparison made. ESPN broadcaster and ex major league baseball player Doug Glanville compared the New York Yankees to the 2005 Oscar winning film "Brokeback Mountain" starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. Glanville was calling the Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training game Monday night when he made the strange comparison.
During the ESPN telecast Glanville said, "They have basically Brokeback Mountain going over here. I mean everybody's on the disabled list or hurt in some form or fashion."
Glanville and play-by-play announcer Jon Sciambi were discussing how old the Yankees team was when the comment slipped out. "Brokeback Mountain" was a critically acclaimed love story between two male cowboys that won three Oscars and was nominated for eight in total at the "78th Academy Awards." The movie has since become the butt of jokes and been known more for the gay cowboy storyline then the movie itself.
Glanville, who played seasons in the major leagues as an outfielder for the Phillies, Cubs, and Rangers likely wasn't making any comparison to the movie's gay storyline. However, when he tried to make the comparison it obviously has caught the attention of many.
Despite the questionable analogy, Glanville was likely grasping at straws in an attempt to fill time during a meaningless Spring Training game. The truth is, the baseball season is long enough as it is, when having to call a three hour Spring Training game that doesn't mean anything, it's probably pretty tedious. Who knows, Glanville may have actually been thinking of a different movie and just made the wrong reference. Either way, I'm pretty sure he wasn't saying the Yankees were a bunch of gay cowboys.
The video, with Glanville's comments can be seen on Yahoo's Big League Stew blog.
The Yankees also recently made headlines when their General Manager Brian Cashman came out and told the Associated Press, retired Atlanta Brave third baseman would "perfect" for the team. The Yankees are searching for someone to help fill their first base vacancy while Mark Teixeira is injured. Unfortunately for the Yankees and Cashman, Jones tweeted, "Enough with the rumors! While I am flattered about the speculation of being enticed out of retirement, I'm happy with life as a bad golfer!"
