In an awesome alternate timeline, children are watching Shrek for the umpteenth time and hearing the sweet, sweet sound of Nicolas Cage's voice.
Cage confirmed that he was offered the role of the titular ogre but turned it down because he didn't want to "look like an ogre."
(The people pitching the idea then presumably explained to Cage how animation works, and yet he still turned it down.)
The Con Air star, who has starred in countless questionable roles, showed that even he can have a sense of regret.
"Maybe I should have done it looking back," Cage admitted.
The role of Shrek eventually went to Mike Myers and the world was left to wonder, what if? The Shrek films turned out to be rather lucrative for Myers. The film's have grossed over $3 billion dollars worldwide at the box office alone. That doesn't account for all of the Shrek merchandise, cereal and DVD sales.
Cage's roles in the Ghost Rider series, National Treasure and The Wicker Man all came post-Shrek offer.
Cage has since starred in animated films including 2009's rodent-centered spy comedy G-Force and the upcoming Dreamworks' picture The Croods, where he will portray the patriarch of the family, Grug.
Cage apparently had his doubts about being portrayed as a caveman, as well.
"They all came out to New Orleans and met with me and showed me a picture of Grug and said: 'Look Nic, this is how I see you'! I said: 'I hope I don't really look like that, but I think I'll do this'," Cage said.
What do you think? Would Nicolas Cage as Shrek be a great movie or the greatest movie?
