Apparently second place is nothing to be proud of. Iowa Hawkeyes wrestler Matt McDonough, a three-time Alll-American wrestler missed out on first place in last weekend's Big Ten Championships tournament in Champaign, Ill. This wasn't good enough for the wrestler as he threw his second place medal in the trash! Student reporter Sam Louwagie discovered the medal in the garbage and tweeted a picture out, resulting in an Internet frenzy.
McDonough placed in second to Jesse Delgado of Illinois, and according to The Daily Iowan, it was McDonough's third loss of the season, the most he has ever had.
McDonough declined to speak after the match, but according The Gazette, the young wrestler attempted to reclaim the medal even before this whole Internet frenzy began.
The Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling program has won 23 national championships since 1975. Clearly the program doesn't like to lose.
You could see this from both sides really. McDonough likely is young and immature and made a mistake by tossing the medal in the garbage. It's understandable that a competitor doesn't want to accept second place, but you don't have to throw the medal away. It doesn't have to be showcased on your dresser, but at least hang onto it until you get home.
The reaction seems to be split on the issue, which is surprising. I expected more people to be up in arms over the wrestler's actions. At the very least it probably shows a lack of judgement by the young man. However, if The Gazette article is true, he quickly knew he made a mistake and tried to right it.
So what do you think of McDonough tossing his second place medal in the trash? Does it just show that he is a fierce competitor who doesn't tolerate losing or does it show that he is a sore loser?
