The "King of All Media" Howard Stern recently responded to rumors that he is being "groomed" to replace Jimmy Fallon on NBC's "Late Night." This just days after a New York Post story reported that network executives are using Stern's gig on "America's Got Talent" to groom the SiriusXM radio host to take over for Fallon on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." These rumors were all started after a story broke that NBC was planning on pushing Leno out of "The Tonight Show" and putting Fallon in his spot, thus opening up the "Late Night" gig.
According to The Examiner's Liz Brown, Stern responded to the rumors on his SiriusXM radio show by telling fans he legally couldn't comment. This comes across as very strange for anyone who has ever heard Stern's radio show. The "shock jock" is known for speaking his mind, no matter what the legal consequences.
Stern reportedly couldn't hold his tongue for long though. According to Brown, during Robin Quivers news segment Stern said, "I was asking some of the [NBC] executives, when I was down there doing 'AGT' and I was like you guys don't respect Jay at all, do you? [about Jay Leno]. They go 'We're not firing him!' That's what they said to me, so I don't know how any of this is true...I don't know. I want to say 'no comment'. I want to keep it going."
One thing to consider is if "Late Night" would be good enough for Stern, who has nothing left to prove at this point in his career. Stern didn't get to the top in radio by being second, which he ultimately would be in NBC's late night rotation if he took over for Fallon. Stern went on to say during Monday's show, "First of all, what an insult...Like, all the years of my career. I'm like, the biggest guy in radio I've done film? I've done television?...I mean, they act like I'm some kind of f---ing beginner or something...Maybe if I'm really nice to NBC they'll let me take over Carson Daly's show at like 2 o'clock in the morning."
This definitely sounds like Stern's thought process. If anything, I would expect Stern to go for Leno's "Tonight Show" spot. Stern has openly criticized Leno in the past and he clearly doesn't like the talk-show host. What better way to get back at him then to take his hosting role at the "Toinght Show." Just an idea.
As for Jimmy Fallon, he is currently in the middle of a special Justin Timberlake week. Timberlake is on "Late Night" all week with Fallon as a guest and musical performer. Timberlake already ended his feud with Kanye West on Monday night's show, then Tuesday night Timberlake and Fallon performed "Sexy Back" in a barbershop quartet version.
