Wes Welker is leaving the New England Patriots for a 2-year, guaranteed $12 million contract with the Denver Broncos. Some feel that, due to the NFL salary cap, this leaves very little for the guy who has had "more catches than anyone in the history of the league in the last six years." Patriots fans and players sad to see the 31-year-old player go. Quarterback Tom Brady said that he was "bummed out" about the departure of Welker. Brady recently restructured his contract to allow more of a salary cap flexibility in order to build a better New England squad.

John Elway, executive vice president of football operations for the Broncos, took to Twitter to talk about Welker coming to Denver. He wrote:

"Excited to have Wes join the Broncos. His production & toughness will be a great asset!"

"Anytime you can take a player from a team you have to compete against, it helps, especially the caliber of Wes Welker."

"New England is there year in and year out and that's a team we have to beat to get where we want to get."

During a press conference yesterday, Broncos coach John Fox spoke about the addition of Welker on the filed for quarterback Peyton Manning. He said, "You try to surround your quarterback with weapons. I think we took a big step in signing Wes Welker. When you're a passing attack and you've got (No.) 18, you're looking for three productive guys out there. I think Wes Welker has proven as productive a slot receiver as there is really in recent NFL history."

Though the Patriots lost Welker, his departure sees them welcoming wide receiver Danny Amendola in his stead from St Louis. The 27-year-old Amendola has signed a 5-year, $31 million deal with $10 million guaranteed.
