In last night's (March 13) "Survivor: Caramoan" episode there was a mental breakdown involving one of the contestants. To be honest, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. Contestant Brandon Hantz, a 21-year-old chemical disposal worker from Katy, Texas had a breakdown on national television Wednesday night during "Persona Non Grata" when he almost gets physical with fellow contestant Phillip. Do Mark Burnett and CBS do a background check before allowing these people on an remote island competition?
Brandon's breakdown began with a back and forth "Who's on First" routine. The only problem is he is the only one involved. First Brandon says he is selfish for leaving his family at home and that he should be voted out. Then he quickly changes his mind deciding he wants to play for his family.
In this week's competition the competitors need to throw coconuts into a net held by two members of the other team until they can't hold up the net anymore. The winners will get meat and veggies to grill. Phillip and Brandon hold up the nets for the "Favorites" team while Matt and Michael hold it up for the "Fans" tribe.
Brandon and Matt are the first two to let go of their nets leaving the competition to Phillip and Michael. The Favorites and Phillip end up winning the competition which means they win a lot of meat.
After the competition Brandon's breakdown escalates. Phillip ends up being the guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. Phillip tries to give Brandon some advice and Brandon freaks out on him to the horror of the rest of his team. Phillip then comes up with a plan to throw the next competition so Brandon will get kicked off the island, but he makes the mistake of telling Andrea, who then tells Brandon his plan.
Brandon reacts as person having a breakdown would by dumping all the rice and beans out of their containers and begging Phillip to vote him out.
For the immunity challenge, Corinne announces the Favorites are forfeiting the challenge giving the Immunity Idol to the Fans, which doesn't please Brandon. Phillip and Brandon end up getting in another heated exchange with Phillip mentioning Brandon's kids, which obviously doesn't sit well with Brandon. The guy has a complete meltdown going on long rants talking about how great he is and just verbally attacking Phillip. The result is Andrea ends up crying and Dawn is breathing in and out trying to find a safe place.
The end is pretty obvious at this point. The Favorites vote off Brandon. At one point Jeff Probst had to rub Brandon's shoulders to make sure he doesn't attack Phillip. Next week's episode (March 20) is "Operation Thunder Dome." What will "Survivor: Caramoan" bring next?
