When Stanley "MC Hammer" Burrell sang, "U Can't Touch This," he wasn't talking to the US Internal Revenue Service. The legendary rapper has found himself in hot water since his old bill in back taxes of $789,033.48 is said to have not been paid in 1996 and 1997, says Bossip. The feds are suing him for the owed balance and a judgement was awarded to the government in 2012.
That amount must not have sat well with the "To Legit To Quit" lyricist, as he filed an appeal to overturn the judge's decisio,n since he thought the amount was covered. It was "unfair he had to pay the amount plus penalties when he ALREADY paid it as part of his bankruptcy." The California resident already shelled out $1,517,450.92 after neglecting to pay up in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
Now, the bill has increased again due to interest and penalties. Hammer says, "To come back after the fact and assert claims after millions of dollars have been paid out by creditors from which these claims have been paid in full, is the misconduct the USA committed." But on Dec. 17, the appellate court order states the rapper has to pay!
The amount may not be so astronomical, since the legendary performer not only was the first recording artist to go diamond, selling over 10 million records. Plus, according to the The Urban Daily, he has interests in Silicon Valley with a tech startup consulting company. "Tech magazines consider Hammer a web mogul," says the media outlet.
And this is not a new thing since he's been successful in this arena for over 10 years. Inc. magazine says, "Among the musician's investments are in contact-sharing app Bump Technologies, mobile payment company Square, and magazine app Flipboard." And if that isn't interesting enough, Hammer is also an ordained minister!
