Reports confirm that at least six (some say seven) vacationers were shot and killed at a popular beach resort on the outskirts of Cancun, Mexico on Thursday (March 14). Two unidentified gunmen opened fire at the luxury resort's poolside bar, leaving several dead and numerous others injured. The suspects are still at large and currently there's no motive connected to the killings, although many of the victims were known members of a taxi drivers union.

Public Safety Secretary Jesus Aiza claims that two men armed with automatic rifles stormed the popular resort as the victims were relaxing near the pool area of the hotel's bar. Initial reports state that six people were killed and 5 more injured, while several other news outlets claim that seven were killed and four injured.

Those who survived the deadly bar shooting are currently under police protection at a nearby hospital. As of now, no suspects have been named in the attack and authorities are still trying to determine a motive for the tragic incident.

Cancun is a popular tourist destination in the Caribbean for many US students during this time of year for spring break. According to Cancun tourism director Maximo Garcia Rocha, the resort where the shooting occurred expects nearly 43,000 vacationers to reside there during the holiday. Rocha states that in an effort to protect tourists, law enforcement presence will increase.

Mexico's crime problem (mostly having to do with violence) largely stems from the country's infamous drug trade. Just recently, six Spanish women were reportedly attacked and raped by several individuals when suspects stormed a rented beach house in Acapulco. Statistics show that nearly 70,000 people have died as a result of drug-related violence since 2007. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto says that he plans on finding ways to reduce the amount of violence that plagues the country on a regular basis.

Suspects involved in the tragic bar shooting are still at large, and an investigation is currently underway.
