While fans eagerly await the fourth season of David Fincher's popular political drama House of Cards, the Oscar-nominated director has revealed his next project with Netflix, and it involves the government once again, as Charlize Theron will be starring in FBI drama Mindhunter.
According to Deadline, the Gone Girl director and the Mad Max: Fury Road star will be teaming up for the upcoming Netflix project, which will be based on the 1996 book, Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, whch goes behind the scenes in several high profile cases at the agency.
AV Club reports that Fincher and Theron, both of whom are also executive producers for the upcoming drama, have been working on the project for quite some time. In fact, the project was first set as an HBO series six years ago, until it was ultimately scraped. It didn't come back to life until just now.
While the original HBO series had a script by Dexter showrunner Scott Buck, the new project on Netflix counts with the talent of Joe Penhall when it comes to writing the screenplay, adapting the book to the binge-watching format.
The book the show will be based on is an autobiographical account by former special agent John Douglas (as well as Mark Olshaker) and it recounts Douglas' days in the FBI as a profiler, as he pursued some of the most notorious serial killers in recent times, like the Atlanta child murderer.
Douglas has been the basis for a few fictional characters, including Jack Crawford from Thomas Harris' saga about Hannibal Lecter and the Criminal Minds profiler Jason Gideon.
There's no word yet on whether Fincher will sit at the director's chair for any of the show's episodes, though considering he's done so for House of Cards and has similar crime dramas in his résumé (such as Seven and Zodiac), it seems likely.
