Dave Grohl is known as a talented drummer, guitarist, singer and humorist. His musical career has spanned two decades and has been incredibly entertaining to follow. Grohl seems to always be in good spirits, often showing his sense of humor in music videos and interviews, too. So when he was invited to SXSW to make a keynote speech, people were understandably excited to hear what the young legend had to say about the current state of the industry and to see HOW he said it. To nobody's surprise but most people's delights, he talked straight from the heart, often cursing to make a point.
Here are some short excerpts from the speech:
"I was lost (and) numb [...] I turned off the radio and put my drums away [after hearing of former band mate Kurt Cobain's death]"
"Left to your own devices you can find your own voice. Cherish it. Respect it. Nurture it. Challenge it. Stretch it."
"Gangnam Style is one of my favorite (expletive) songs of the last decade. Is it better than the latest Atoms For Peace album (from Radiohead singer Thom Yorke)? Hmm. If only we had a celebrity panel of judges to determine that for us.
"Who's to say what is a good voice and what's not a good voice? The Voice? Imagine Bob Dylan standing there singing Blowin' in the Wind in front of Christina Aguilera. 'I think it's a little nasally and sharp.' "
"[In regards to giving his two daughters, ages 3 and 6, The Beatles' albums on vinyl] As a proud father, I pray they are left to their own devices and they realize the musician comes first and they become someone's Beatles. ... But then again, what do I know?"
