Frank Thornton Dies: Captain Peacock on 'Are You Being Served?' Actor Passes Away At 92

Veteran British actor Frank Thornton, best known for his portrayal of Captain Peacock in the long-running sitcom 'Are You Being Served?', passed away on Saturday at the age of 92.

According to the actor's agent David Daly, Thornton died in his sleep at his London home.

He was a great friend and consummate performer who was the glue who really held 'Are You Being Served?' together," said the show's co-creator, Jeremy Lloyd. "He will continue to give people enjoyment."

Thornton became a household name throughout the U.K. for his portrayal of Peacock, an arrogant floor manager who oversaw his employees at the Grace Brothers department store that served as the setting for 'Are You Being Served?' The show ran on BBC for 10 seasons between 1972 and 1985.

"I have been Frank's agent since 1986 and he has been the most wonderful client as well as being a great friend. He will be sorely missed," Daly told the BBC.

Thornton got his start in acting by taking nighttime acting classes after he finished his work at an insurance company. He starting doing theater on the West End of London before being interrupted by World War II. After the war ended, Thornton dove right back into acting.

Over his 60 year career, Thornton also racked up credits on "The Benny Hill Show" and "Last of the Summer Wine" as well as movies like "No Sex Please, We're British" and "Gosford Park."

Thornton is survived by his wife Beryl, daughter Jane and three grandchildren.
