Reports confirm that alternative musician Jason Molina, the popular Songs: Ohia singer known for his work with the band Magnolia Electric Co., died in his Indianapolis home on Saturday (March 16) due to advanced organ failure. The 39-year-old songwriter struggled with severe alcoholism, which led to stints in rehab and serious health-related problems. Molina's record label Secretly Canadian claims that the lo-fi singer released over 12 albums under the name Songs: Ohia and with the band Magnolia Electric Co. before disappearing from the industry to deal with his substance abuse issues in 2009.

Several fans and fellow musicians have since offered their sorrow and condolences on Twitter, honoring the late talented and original folksinger:

@BrentSirota: "Sad news about Jason Molina. His catalog had a handful of genuine masterpieces in it. Only met him once and we spoke about The Darkness."

@colinmeloy: "ughjason molina. so sad. rest in peace."

@jimjames: "RIP Jason Molina. honored to have shared a release with you. "magnolia electric co" record is one of the greats. much love to you brother."

@emmetmatheson: "'We are proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn.' RIP Jason Molina."

@hawkt: "alcoholism is an insidious disease. rest in peace, Jason Molina."

@danielralston: "Crushed to hear about the passing of Jason Molina. No song has ever meant more to me than 'Farewell Transmission.'"

The Ohio-native took part in the evolutionary music project Songs: Ohia, which meshed together the sounds of several genres including indie rock, lo-fi, folk, blues, and alt-country among others. He later when on to record with a stable band lineup under the name Magnolia Electric Co. Molina also continued to release solo projects including 2004's hit "Pyramid Electric Co," with songs and lyrics that portrayed a dark, personal fragility.

Molina went inactive in 2009 due to poor health.

A message attributed to his family and posted on the label's website on Sept. 19, 2011, said that Molina had been in and out of rehabilitation facilities and hospitals in England, Chicago, Indianapolis, and New Orleans over the previous two years and was raising goats and chickens in West Virginia. Secretly Canadian released this official statement on Monday.

Thoughts and condolences go out to Molina's family, friends, and fans during this time of loss.
