The highly anticipated Sherlock Christmas special, "The Abominable Bride," aired yesterday in the UK and the US to much fanfare and a lot of tweeting. #Sherlock is still trending on Twitter, with over 250,000 tweets so far. Reviews seem to be mostly positive, with fans and stars alike taking to the internet to express their (often amusing) feelings. Here, we unpack the best reactions so far from fans and stars of the show.
No major spoilers from the episode will be found here, but if you haven't caught up on the special yet and want to go in knowing next to nothing, beware!
Louise Brealey, who plays the beloved Molly Hooper on the show, tweeted about her character's fun twist:
SPOILER. I think I make a prettier boy than I do girl, and I'm alright with that. #Sherlock #Hooper pic.twitter.com/ZYV0WniPaj

Brealey wasn't the only star to weigh in. Amanda Abbington, real-life and on-screen wife of Martin Freeman aka John Watson, added in her two cents:
How lovely you've all been about the Special! It was fun wasn't it. Being in Sherlock's mind for 90 minutes. Fun and a little bit crazy. XxX

The episode has several hilarious moments, and fans really seemed to like one instance in particular: when Sherlock and Watson are speaking sign language and Watson has a mistranslation. One fan captured the moment perfectly, saying:
#Sherlock has tempted me to reply, "I am glad you liked my potato," whenever someone compliments something I've written. #John

Fans really loved all of the changes to the characters:
New #Sherlock takeaway: Molly rocks a mustache much better than Watson — Anna Nowogrodzki (@AnnaNowo) January 2, 2016
i think one important thing we learned tonight, children, is that - in any quantum reality- #Sherlock is nailing the dapper outerwear — emery lord (@emerylord) January 2, 2016
Fat Mycroft might have been everyone's favorite change, though:
Mycroft looks like something from Doctor Who that eats people #Sherlock — poe don't do it (@zed_pm) January 2, 2016
Nope. I was wrong. #Fatcroft has actually killed me. Goodbye. #Sherlock — Nat (@celeryjacket) January 2, 2016
Yaaaaaasss fat Mycroft!!! My 2016 has been made #Sherlock #SherlockSpecial — Jennifer Leary (@JML726) January 2, 2016
Although, the special wasn't perfect:
So while I loved tonight's new #Sherlock, leave it to #Moffat to write an episode about feminism that fails the Bechdel test...

two years later and the #Sherlock fandom is possibly more confused than before. — Daniel Hammond (@IAmHammond) January 2, 2016
Overall, though, fans mostly loved the special and are sad they have to wait at least a year for more episodes:
How unfortunate for the rest of the year that the TV highlight of 2016 came on Jan 1. #Sherlock — Jane Jardine (@janejardine) January 2, 2016
Watched the #Sherlock special thrice today and I still have tons of questions. 2017 is so far awaaaaaaayyyyyg — Hooper. Holmes. (@lengsungit) January 2, 2016

No word on TV ratings in the US, but in the UK the special has been crowned with the honor "biggest holiday-season overnight audience" for a show. With 8.4 million viewers, it came out to a share of 34.7 percent of people watching TV in the country at the time, the BBC said.
The special aired in both the UK and US on the same day, which is a first for the series.
The fourth season of the show will begin filming in April, with a rumored air date of 2017.
