The Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas is well known for their protests and "God Hates Fags" slogan. It looks like the church's neighbors are going to be putting on their own protest by painting the colors of the Gay Pride Flag on their house. This way the members of the Westboro Baptist Church will have to look at the newly painted house every day.
The controversial church group are constantly making headlines for their head scratching protests. Now, they are on the other end of a movement. A new gay rights center across the street is painting their house rainbow colors along with a pride flag flying high above.
The newly painted house, which should be finished up today (Tuesday March 19), is the work of 31-year-old humanitarian Aaron Jackson. Jackson told FOX 4 that he and fellow volunteers are getting nothing but positive responses from the local community. "People keep coming out, honking horns, taking pictures," Jackson said. "There has been no negative response."
Jackson helped create the non-profit organization Planting Peace that bought the house across the street from the church about six months ago. Jackson and the non-profit organization are reportedly going to call the home the "Equality House."
Jackson told the Huffington Post that he only heard of the Westboro Baptist Church from the news. "And one night I wondered, 'Where is this church?' Jackson said. "I got on Google Earth, and I was 'walking down the road,' and I did a 360 view. And I saw a 'For Sale' sign sitting in the front yard of a house. Right away it hit me, 'Oh my gosh, I could buy a house in front of the WBC!' And immediately I thought: 'And I'm going to paint that thing the color of the pride flag'."
