A Sunday in the NFL epitomized by a missed extra point attempt and a helmet ricocheting into your face by your own doing is known as a bad Sunday. This, unfortunately, was how Dan Carpenter's Sunday was going.
The Buffalo Bills kicker lined up to kick an extra point--a kick of roughly 30-yards, known to be something of a no-brainer for an NFL place kicker--after the Bills had scored a touchdown to make it 13-0 over the New York Jets. He yanked it wide left. The score remained 13-0.
Not surprisingly, Carpenter was upset; like, how dare you take my hot pocket, you know that's the last one and you know how much I need that right now, upset. Upon making it to the sidelines he ripped off his helmet and heaved it to the ground with two hands. And, in an act of gravity defiance, the helmet said no and bounced right back up and hit him in the face.
To be fair, it was a windy day. Yes, that's a poor excuse for someone kicking balls for a living in the NFL, but it really was. What is hard to excuse is that it was Carpenter's 6th missed extra point attempt on the year, a perplexing statistic considering he has actually missed fewer field goal tries, going 20 of 24 on the year (field goals tires can range anywhere from 20-yards to 50-plus yards in length, and are typically regarded as more difficult than an extra point).
That said, the injury depleted Bills would be able to overcome this adversity. They went on to win the game 22-17, thanks, in large, to three consecutive interceptions on Jets quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, late in the game. The loss put the Jets' record to 10-6, 1 win shy of the playoffs. The Bills finished at 8-8, but gave Rex Ryan, their head coach and former Jets head coach, the sweet send off he so desired.
