Justin Timberlake took to the CW last night to air his brand new music video "Mirrors" off of his new album, The 20/20 Experience. The single follows his bar mitzvah-ready jam "Suit and Tie" and is a much more emotional song than its predecessor.

The video appears to follow the 63-year relationship between Timberlake’s grandparents, William and Sadie. The content of the song follows a central theme of soulmates being an extension of yourself hence the idea of “When I look at you, it’s like looking in a mirror” that runs throughout. Timberlake’s grandfather passed away last year.

The video starts with a old woman (who is presumably meant to resemble Timberlake’s grandmother) standing in the bedroom. There is an older man there who mirrors all of her movements, representing the lingering spirit of Timberlake’s grandfather and the aforementioned mirror theme.

The video continues on to show the couple at various stages in their relationship. They meet, they go to a carnival fun house (full of mirrors, ya see), they fall in love, they get married, they argue, they get old.
Timberlake himself doesn’t appear in The 20/20 Experience’s second music video until halfway through the clip. He’s dancing in a hall of mirrors and is eventually joined by several back up dancers.

As for the song, it’s very, very good. The schmaltzy “Suit and Tie” had me worried about The 20/20 Experience overall but JT totally redeemed himself with this one. Timberlake hasn’t released an emotional and deeply personal song like this since “Cry Me A River” off of Justified, which detailed the singer’s feelings after a very public break-up with fellow teen idol Britney Spears.

Timbaland’s signature production style oozes throughout, with haunting strings and beatboxing mouth noises providing the backdrop for Justin to get all, well, reflective. The song tops 8 minutes but you don’t feel it at all. JT keeps you into the song throughout.
