Reports confirm that 26-year-old Lindsay Lowe was recently found guilty of smothering her newborn twin sons to death moments after their birth back in September 2011. Lowe was charged with two counts of felony first degree murder, felony premeditated murder, and aggravated child abuse in a Tennessee court on Tuesday (March 19). She was ultimately sentenced to life in prison. During emotional testimony, detectives said they shockingly discovered the babies’ lifeless bodies buried in bloody laundry days after their birth in Lowe's family home. The troubled young woman admitted to strangling her sons, but claimed that her sole intent was to keep the infants quiet so her parents would not find them.
According to reports, the deceased newborn twins were found thrown amongst bloody clothes in a laundry basket in the upstairs bedroom of Lowe's parents’ home in suburban Nashville on September 12, 2011. The bodies were first found by Lowe's parents, who then promptly alerted authorities.
What exactly led Lowe to murder her babies still remains unknown - she gave birth alone and undetected in her family home before committing the deadly act. According to several family members and friends, Lowe was part of a bridal party just days before the delivery and changed her clothes in front of several witnesses - allegedly there was no physical indication that she was nearing the end of a pregnancy.
Hendersonville Police Detective Steve Malach said that Lowe told him that she kept her pregnancy secret in order to not disappoint her fiance or add more stress to him during a family member's illness. According to News Channel 5, Lowe's friends and family claim that she did not act like a pregnant woman.
Prosecutors argued in court that Lowe was cognizant and aware of her actions, while witnesses for the defendant claimed otherwise. A psychiatrist testified that statements from Lowe after the bodies were found were not credible - the mother was clearly in denial about what had occurred and her mental state was questionable.
Local news reports state, “Attorneys for 26-year-old Lowe contended those actions prove she was in denial about being pregnant. A psychiatrist testified that Lowe was delusional when she gave birth … He claimed that things only began to set in for Lowe when she was brought in for questioning two days later, and pointed out that she answered ‘I guess’ 35 times and ‘I don’t know’ several times during the interview with police.”
But after convincing testimony, Lowe was ultimately found guilty of the tragic crime by a Tennessee jury on Tuesday - she was sentenced to life in prison on the murder counts. Her bond was revoked and she was promptly taken into custody.
