The race to the Oscars officially kicks off this Sunday, with the first big awards show of the season: The Golden Globes. The show promises to be interesting, both for its host, Ricky Gervais, and for the fact that no clear winners have come forth in many big categories in film. Here, we attempt to tackle who the winners in film will be come Sunday night, despite the unpredictable year and intense competition. Our three biggest winners? Spotlight, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson.
Most notably, we predict Spotlight will take home the top prize of Best Picture in the drama category. The film seems to be the frontrunner this season due to its strong performances by an ensemble cast, strong script and juicy story. Furthermore, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (who runs the Globes) is the press, after all, so a film about a team of journalists who tackle a huge scandal in the Roman Catholic Church probably resonates. We predict The Big Short will take the prize in the Best Picture, musical or comedy category, although The Martian could prove to be victorious instead.
The acting awards are a little easier, with Leonardo DiCaprio the clear frontrunner for Best Actor in a drama for his role in The Revenant. He's already won in multiple critics' circles, and is nominated in the rest. Matt Damon is set to take the comedy equivalent in Best Actor awards for his role in The Martian, though Christian Bale (The Big Short) is a likely runner up.
Best Actress in a drama is a bit tougher, however, with Brie Larson and Cate Blanchett going head-to-head in most critics' circles up to this point for their respective roles in Room and Carol. However, Larson seems to have the edge, and the addition of Rooney Mara to the category, also from Carol, muddies the category up enough that some voters may opt to choose Larson in lieu of choosing between the two Carol contenders.
The award for Best Actress in a musical or comedy will probably go to Amy Schumer, as the HFPA has a history of riding popular tides, and the Trainwreck star is most definitely on a roll with nominations at the SAG Awards and a big win at the Emmys for her comedy show, Inside Amy Schumer.
