The petition to bring George Lucas back to the Star Wars franchise has been getting a lot of buzz, and fans are obviously excited over the idea of having him direct the third film in the new trilogy. There's just one problem: Episode IX already has a director, which is none other than Colin Trevorrow, the man behind Jurassic World. Trevorrow has finally spoke up about the petition, which aims to have Lucas replace him as Episode IX director.

The Safety Not Guaranteed helmer recently spoke with ET, where he revealed that he found out about the petition at a rather inopportune time.

"I saw that [petition], and it was on a day where I was at LucasFilm giving this big speech to everyone about how we want to channel the invention and just the raw creativity and the boldness that George brought to these films and not being afraid that we're going to embarrass ourselves by doing something that might be crazy," Trevorrow said.

Despite being in a very awkward situation involving the creative genius behind Star Wars, rabid fans and a highly-anticipated film, Trevorrow only has nice things to say about Lucas.

"When George Lucas made Star Wars, a lot of people thought it was crazy," he said. "When you try to pitch what that movie's about -- if you've never heard of Star Wars before, you say, 'Here's a character. His father's part robot, but he can also do magic. And there's a guy who can fly in a spaceship. He's got a dog for a friend!' -- it sounds insane. But it's the greatest story ever told. I just want to embrace that kind of invention and creativity that he brought to it."

The Star Wars petition currently has more than 20,000 signatures and although fans feel that it will be triumphant in replacing Trevorrow with Lucas, there is no guarantee that the Book of Henry director will actually step down from Episode IX. There is also a possibility that Lucas is not interested in taking on the project, since Disney has already taken the Star Wars franchise in a different direction compared to what he had planned.

Star Wars Episode IX is scheduled for release in 2019.
