One Direction previously assured fans they were simply on hiatus and not splitting up for good. But new reports suggest the band members have decided not to renew their contracts and are breaking up permanently.
One Direction has been the most popular global boy band in the past 10 years, with millions of fans. The band has sold more than 17 million albums worldwide and toured for five years. Their tours have all made at least $200 million, according to Fusion.
The band announced they would be taking a hiatus, but promised fans it was not a permanent split.
Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson told E! news on the red carpet of the Billboard Music Awards in May 2015 that the band was not breaking up.
Us Weekly reports that One Direction are now making the hiatus permanent, stating that Horan, Styles, Payne, and Tomlinson had not renewed their contracts. The publication cites a source that stated, "The 1D thing just ran its course. They'll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers."
Us Weekly's source said Payne's interest lies in songwriting and production and he was in the studio with rapper Juicy J earlier this week.

Styles is "launching a career in acting and singing."
Tomlinson will have a busy year after it was revealed he is expecting a baby girl with stylist Briana Jungwirth.
Despite the news, Billboard has disputed Us Weekly's report, stating, "Nothing has changed regarding hiatus plans for the group and all will be revealed in due time from the band members' own mouths."
If the One Direction split report is true, the band will at least still be releasing a video for another track on their "Made in the A.M." album.
