Harry Potter actress and famous feminist Emma Watson is facing some backlash over a tribute she made to her Potter costar, Alan Rickman, who died Thursday. The actress tweeted a picture of Rickman with a quote in favor of men being feminists, and some people found the move to be insensitive.
The quote in question says, "There is nothing wrong with a man being a feminist, I think it is to our mutual advantage." Watson captioned the tweet simply, #alanrickman. Rickman played the infamous Severus Snape in the Potter franchise, while Watson famously played the role of Hermione Granger.
The tweet has over 100,000 likes and over 65,000 retweets, but not everyone is a fan of the message. Twitter trolls quickly attacked the quote, but from various angles.
One person wrote: "Oh wow, you're using someone's death to push a completely unrelated agenda. This is so, so gross."
Another tweeted: "Funny how you used this man's death to further your political agenda but you never call for women to be held #EqualB4Law"
Another user wrote: "You knew him...I'm guessing he was your friend. You're using his memory for propaganda, please, think about it again..."
Many others commented similar things, with fans of Watson's (and the quote she used) coming to her defense.
One person quipped, "Yes how dare she post something he said. #MoronsEverywhere." Many others made the argument that Watson was simply "highlighting his character" and didn't mean anything by the quote, calling her to "ignore the misogynistic haters."
Watson is an advocate for the HeForShe campaign as a part of her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women. She has been largely praised for her work.
Watson has not responded to the haters, but has continued to post tributes to Rickman. A post on her Facebook page reads, "I'm very sad to hear about Alan today. I feel so lucky to have worked and spent time with such a special man and actor. I'll really miss our conversations. RIP Alan. We love you."
Rickman died Thursday of cancer.
