The world's still in mourning after the shocking news of David Bowie's death from cancer less than two weeks ago, but that's not about to stop Hollywood's remake train from happening. Producers have just announced that Labyrinth, the classic 1986 fantasy film with Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as Sarah Williams, is getting a remake.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, TriStar recently closed a deal with The Jim Henson Company to reboot the 1986 film, and they've hired Nicole Perlman, co-writer of Marvel's box office smash Guardians of the Galaxy, to pen the screenplay.
The original film was Henson's last gig as director, and everybody behind the scenes was a major star, from executive producer George Lucas to Monty Python member Terry Jones, who wrote the screenplay. While the 1986 movie failed to get a lot of viewers in theaters, in the 30 years since its release, it has gathered a cult following.
Entertainment Weekly was able to gather a bit more information about the new project and it turns out the film won't be exactly a remake but more of a sequel of sorts. The first reports of a new project in this universe first appeared in October 2014, though it's only now that the deal has become official. It seems more than likely that the deal was rushed after Bowie's recent death with multiple news outlets remembering his role in the film.
The original movie starred Connelly as a teenage girl who wished her baby brother would go away, and her wish was granted when Goblin King Jareth (Bowie) snatches him and takes him to his castle to turn him into a goblin too. Desperate to retrieve her brother, the young girl goes on an adventure through a labyrinth to get her sibling back. It was one of Connelly's first roles on the big screen.
