Shonda Rhimes, the queen of ABC with her production company Shondaland (after hits like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder), is bringing a new show to the network. Taking her cues from William Shakespeare, Rhimes will be giving Romeo and Juliet a sequel following their families after the lovers' deaths, as Still Star-Crossed gets a pilot!
According to Jezebel, Rhimes' new show, a sequel of sorts of Shakespeare's classic tragedy, will be taken from a novel written by Melinda Taub. In the book, the Capulets and Montagues continue to feud after the deaths of the teenage lovers, ultimately deciding to end the blood bath by having two members of the families getting married.
So far, there's no news on the cast of the upcoming series but Rhimes is bringing in the big members of her Shondaland team, including producers Betsy Beers and Heather Mitchell. For a change, Rhimes and Beers will only serve as executive producers in the period series, so they won't be writing for the show, while Mitchell will be on the writing team for this project.
Variety had first reported on the show's early production back in October, revealing that Shondaland was trying to extend its series type beyond adult dramas, with a teenage twist this time around. This is only one of many projects in production at Rhimes' office, as there's also "a Catholic nun drama, a suburban singles comedy, and a Baghdad-set military drama."
Still, though there had been work on the series for months, it's only now that ABC has confirmed it and has ordered a pilot.
If the pilot is picked up as a series for the 2016-2017 season, this will be Rhimes' fifth show for ABC, as she's got a new one coming up next Tuesday called The Catch, a midseason drama starring Mireille Enos and Peter Krause.
