Amazon Buys Woody Allen's New Movie Before Miley Cyrus' Prime Series Premiere

Months after it was announced that Woody Allen's first project with Amazon Prime, his first-ever television series, would star Miley Cyrus, the legendary filmmaker has signed another deal with the streaming giant. The Annie Hall director's new film, which stars the likes of Kristen Stewart and Steve Carell, will be streaming exclusively on Amazon.

According to Fortune, Amazon Studios has just signed a new deal with the Oscar-winning director for the North American rights to his next movie, a period romantic comedy set in the 1930's.

The film, which was shot last summer between Los Angeles and New York City, has an outstanding cast that also includes Blake Lively as well as a few actors that have worked with Allen in the past, including Parker Posey (who co-starred in last year's Irrational Man), Jesse Eisenberg (who was in To Rome with Love) and Corey Stoll (Midnight in Paris), among others.

CNN Money reports that Allen's next film will get a traditional release distributed by Amazon, and when it's time for the movie to show up on streaming sites, the film will be on Prime exclusively.

"Like all beginning relationships, there is much hope, mutual affection, and genuine goodwill -- the lawsuits come later," the filmmaker said in a statement after announcing his latest partnership with Amazon.

In the past few years, Allen's films, which are usually made independently and away from large studios, have been released by Sony Pictures Classics. The reason Allen usually finds such great performers to work with is his history with actors. In the past, many have won Academy Awards under his direction, most recently Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine.

After releasing its first batch of original shows, Amazon and Netflix have been growing in the movie-making market in the past few months. Later this year, Amazon is also releasing its biggest Sundance Film Festival purchase, Manchester By the Sea, to squeeze it into the awards season of 2017.
