This month, Netflix will release Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, the sequel to Ang Lee's Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, with Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Yu Shu Lien. The new trailer promises great things!
According to The Verge, the trailer drops barely a week before the film is scheduled for release. The sequel to the 2000 film is the first original movie Netflix announced and takes a few different steps from its predecessor.
Lee isn't involved with the sequel, which is also titled The Green Legend. Instead, it is directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, a veteran martial artist who worked on Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as numerous Chinese projects.
And unlike Crouching Tiger, which was Mandarin, Sword of Destiny is almost entirely in English.
Interestingly enough, Sword of Destiny was the first original film Netflix announced -- back in 2014, quite a while before the multiple award-winning Beasts of No Nation.
The concept of the film seems straight out of Star Wars: Yu Shu Lien, a master swordswoman in her own right after years of training, trains takes an apprentice, Silver Vase (Xia Zitong), who ultimately turns against her.
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny" tells an epic story of lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption, set against breathtaking action in an epic martial arts battle between good and evil that will decide the fate of the Martial World," reads the film's synopsis, via Maxim.
The Crouching Tiger sequel will be available in theaters and Netflix starting Feb. 26.
