For the better part of five seasons, fans have been rooting for Kerry Washington's Gladiator Olivia Pope and Tony Goldwyn's Fitzgerald Grant to work through their issues and be happily ever after in Vermont. Now, as the two apparently get over each other on Scandal, it's time to set the record straight: Olitz is a terrible, terrible couple -- and here are 6 reasons why you should hate Fitz.
1. Fitz is territorial.
This man has some serious issues. Ever since the very beginning of Scandal, Fitz has demanded Olivia's full emotional attention, even though he was married for the better part of the show to Mellie (Bellamy Young). Whenever a man has come close to being with Liv, Fitz has felt entitled to call her names and have her under surveillance, which also means wasting precious CIA resources in having his mistress followed around.
2. Fitz cheats, yet he demands complete faithfulness.
This doesn't just happen with Liv, whenever she's with Jake (Scott Foley) or any other man, but also with Mellie. Remember when she had an affair with Jon Tenney's Andrew? Mellie was happy for the first time ever, and as soon as he found out about it, Fitz demanded that she end the relationship, even though he had been having an on-and-off affair with Olivia for years. Very classy.
2. Fitz treats his wife like garbage.
Whatever your feelings towards Mellie Grant are, the fact is that she tried to make her marriage work, though her efforts were quite misguided on more than one occasion. Still, this is a woman who stood up for her husband for years, even when his father abused her, and Fitz still constantly belittled her in every possible way.
At first, they got along pretty decently and it wasn't until years into their relationship that he began to mistreat her. Why wouldn't he do the same with Olivia or any other woman later on?
3. Fitz likes strong women, but kept in a leash.
Mellie and Olivia are very well educated women, but once they reached the White House, Fitz made everything to keep them from being functional. While the official job of the First Lady has a lot to do with redecorating and looking pretty, Fitz also tried really hard to have both Mellie (and later Liv) basically in his claws in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Also, that stunt of guilt-tripping Liv into moving in with him at the White House? Very healthy.
4. Fitz is petty.
As if being needy, possessive and über jealous wasn't enough, Fitz is no stranger to name-calling. He called Mellie "ornamental" just to spite her (when she gave up her own ambitions to help make him into a President), and he also called Olivia a whore. Altogether, not the best sign of a healthy relationship.
5. Fitz brings out the worst in Olivia.
Now, this isn't entirely Fitz's fault. Sure, he's emotionally abusive and he's no stranger to being mean when he doesn't get his way, but Liv's a grown woman and she shouldn't let this guy (or any other one, really) get into her skin so badly.
Still, Olivia, who's a powerhouse in what she does and one of the most badass women on television, is perpetually about to cry when Fitz is around. She becomes emotionally insecure, listens to her gut less, and she's willing to break the law for him.
6. Fitz is a HORRIBLE President.
Every character on Fitz's team seems convinced he's set to do great things, but what are they? Whenever he's made a leadership decision by himself (which doesn't happen a lot, seeing as he's also very easy to manipulate and anyone can tell him what to do), he balances out absurdly.
This is a man who chose to go to war because his mistress had been kidnapped. That's not romantic, it's selfish and ridiculous: he's the leader of the free world, and yet he chooses to endanger the lives of thousands of troops over his girlfriend. What kind of President does that?!
Sure, Fitz is passionate, his scenes with Olivia are about as hot as things get on Scandal and he talks the big talk when it comes to the dreams of making jam in Vermont, but let's face it: if Olivia were your friend, you'd tell her to leave that unhealthy relationship ... and thankfully, it seems like she finally did.
Is Jake the better choice for Olivia? Perhaps Liv should just try being alone for once and just focus on being Mellie's Chief of Staff once she reaches the White House in full Girl Power mode.
