Patrick Swayze remains one of the great treasures of film six years after his death, and although he'll never be forgotten, that doesn't mean homages will stop happening. In the latest news from the upcoming ABC musical remake of Dirty Dancing, Colt Prattes has been hired to play Swayze's role of Johnny Castle, who'll teach dancing to Abigail Breslin's Baby!
According to Deadline, Prattes, basically a newcomer, has been cast in the role made famous by Swayze, playing the dance instructor at a resort.
So far, Prattes has done work as a singer and dancer, and his most famous appearances have been mostly related to singer P!nk, since he appeared on her "Try" video and later toured with her. He also starred in a Las Vegas production of popular musical Rock of Ages.
For now, he's only the third person cast in the film, joining Academy Award nominee Breslin (in the role that made Jennifer Grey an international star in the '80s) and Will & Grace alum Debra Messing as Baby's mother, Marjorie, a role played in 1987 by Kelly Bishop.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, the majority of team members for the project so far are on the crew side. Those involved so far in the Dirty Dancing remake include executive producers Allison Shearmur and Eleanor Bergstein (the latter of whom also wrote the original film's screenplay), director Wayne Blair, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and writer Jessica Sharzer, currently penning the script.
At the moment, details of the remake remain scarce, other than the fact that it will be a musical and, unlike Grease Live! and Peter Pan Live! it will be filmed in studio instead of a theater performance on camera. Still, it's an evident move from ABC after the success of NBC's Live! versions of popular musicals/films, reaching for other popular movies to readapt to the small screen.
