Days before the Season 4 of House of Cards is released, the current Netflix President receives a major honor: a portrait in the Smithsonian!
Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood is among the most evil men on television in the past few years. He is the foundation in which Netflix's flagship show stands on, with his Machiavellian moves to get the power of the White House and beyond.
Since Feb. 24, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery has hosted fictional President (and ruthless politician) Frank Underwood in a portrait created by celebrated British artist Jonathan Yeo. It will be on view from now until mid October.
The people attending the unveiling of the new portrait got to see another treat: an early premiere of the fourth installment of the House of Cards story, a show that has already been confirmed for another season days before Frank Underwood returns to the streaming site.
Yeo met up with Spacey several times on set to paint his portrait, and this is actually the second time he works with the actor. According to Fortune Magazine, London's National Portrait Gallery hosted a rendition of Spacey's Richard III from September 2013 through January 2014.
Yeo specializes in portraits and he's given life to some of the biggest icons of our time, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and British queen consort Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"It's more voyeuristic, less confrontational, if the subject is looking at you, playfully controlling you, saying, 'Who do you think you're looking at?'" Yeo told The Daily Beast, when explaining how he'd captured Spacey's latest character. "I painted [British artist] Damien Hirst in a similar pose."
As for Spacey, who holds Frank Underwood close in his heart after his performance as the character earned him his first-ever Golden Globe (nevermind the two Oscars already under his belt), he said he was "delighted" to be a small part of such an iconic instutition.
The new season of House of Cards premieres on Netflix on March 4.
