There are only a few months to go before the premiere of Captain America: Civil War, yet fans are already divided between Team Cap and Team Iron Man. Although the film is very much a Captain America sequel, Robert Downey Jr. still believes that the movie will expand on Tony Stark's story and will not treat the Marvel superhero as a villain!

Downey recently spoke to USA Today, where he pointed out that Civil War will focus on Chris Evans' character, but that doesn't mean we will see Tony as the bad guy before he returns in Avengers: Infinity War.

"In a way it's Cap 3 but for me, it's like my little Iron Man 4 and then it's back to the thing we all recognize," Downey said, explaining that the Phase 3 storyline will take a different turn when Infinity War arrives.

"Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that's how it is until it changes," he said before adding, "If it changes."

But is it safe to assume that Tony Stark will be transformed into the villain in future Marvel films? Downey says that it could happen, but he still wants to make sure Tony is still likable until the end.

"If we're going to go there, then we've got to save it for my swan song," he said, adding that Iron Man shouldn't be considered a full villain in Civil War.

"I would still like to keep a general audience and mildly be in their favor somehow," Downey concluded.

Civil War, which is directed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier helmers Anthony and Joe Russo, is loosely based on the comic book series storyline that pits Steve Rogers against Tony when the government tries to control the superheroes. While Iron Man agrees with the new law, Steve decides to fight against the patriot act.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.
