After a three-month hiatus, the first 2016 episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe show Agents of SHIELD, was surprisingly uneventful, prepping things up for the rest of the season and not expanding too much on the current stories. On it, the Secret Warrior team grows, while the Inhuman inhabiting Grant Ward's dead body gets stronger each day.
After a superpowered person, obviously an Inhuman, steals some weapons in the Colombian capital, SHIELD sends a team with their best players to Bogota to check what's up: Daisy (Chloe Bennet), Joey (Juan Pablo Raba), Mack (Henry Simmons), Bobbi (Adrienne Palicki) and Hunter (Nick Blood).
It turns out there's a super speedy Flash-like Inhuman on the loose, Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), who kidnaps Mack the moment they set eyes on each other, though ultimately he's rescued by Daisy, who knocks Yo-Yo out and ends up putting her in a containment pod for Inhumans.
As it turns out, Yo-Yo, who sees her new powers as a blessing from God, is actually one of the good guys: she and her cousin stole the weapons from the corrupt Colombian police to keep them from harming anyone. As Mack and Daisy realize Yo-Yo's intentions were good, the actual bad guys show up: after Bobbi and Hunter locate Elena's cousin dumping the weapons, two corrupt policemen stop them; one of them is an Inhuman and can stop people into a seemingly comatose state with his eyes.
Ultimately, Bobbi and Hunter are rescued when Daisy and Yo-Yo team up to strike down the bad cops. Ultimately, Yo-Yo stays in Bogota, but something more interesting begins to unfold: she's now an important liaison abroad, as Daisy hints at the possibility of an expanded Secret Warriors team well beyond SHIELD, like her team from when she was a hacker.
Back home, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) is still coping with the death of his girlfriend, Rosalind (Constance Zimmer). The SHIELD director meets up with President Ellis (William Sadler, who's been head of the White House since Iron Man 3), and the two discuss the appearance of the Inhumans, as the politician is concerned they might pose a threat.
Coulson assures Ellis that SHIELD is handling things, and the President is thankful, but can't publicly endorse the agency after the HYDRA fiasco from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Ellis tells Coulson that the Advanced Threat Containment Unit (ATCU) will continue to be the public face on the Inhumans, but he promises he'll get someone who knows Coulson and, by the end of the episode, he announces his decision: General Talbot (Adrian Pasdar), who's had plenty of run-ins with Coulson in the past, so that should be interesting to watch.
Coulson tells the President that Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe) should be outed from all government ties, but Ellis says Malick is too powerful and, while his own hands are tied, Coulson's aren't.
To chase down the visible HYDRA head, Coulson finds Werner Von Strucker (Spencer Treat Clark), who's barely alive after being tortured by the evil organization, and gets inside his brain with a combination of the creepy machine that Raina once used on him and Lincoln's powers as a form of electroshock.
Coulson finds something that ties him to Malick, and they share a short conversation on the phone; the head of SHIELD might be getting closer, but he still has a long way to go.
Malick is currently concentrated on HYDRA's latest plan: the building of an Inhuman army for the recently-arrived banished evil force. The Inhuman, which survived for centuries in a distant planet, is now occupying the body that once belonged to Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), who Coulson killed in the midseason finale.
This creepy Inhuman (who seems to be Marvel character Hive) is supposed to be the one who calls the shots for HYDRA in the future, but there might be conflict between him and Malick in the future.
In other news, Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) and Jemma (Elizabeth Henstridge) are now working together to uncover the mysteries behind Inhuman DNA; and the electric-powered Inhuman is still with Daisy, while Jemma and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) have had a very awkward and distant relationship since "Maveth," though they both vowed to start over during this episode.
There also seems to be a growing theme regarding how Inhumans' powers bring in some sort of evolutionary balance, It should be interesting to see where that leads.
The next Agents of SHIELD episode will air on ABC on March 15.
