MAD Magazine has continued "The Mad Fold-In," a feature found on the inside back cover of virtually every issue, ever since 1964. Cartoonist Al Jafee, the man responsible for this famous MAD Fold-In pieces, celibates a true milestone, his 95th birthday.
Artist Al Jaffee has been with MAD for over 61 years. The Savannah, Georgia native is remarkably still the mind and hands behind the iconic "Fold-In" of the New York publishing institution. This makes him the publication's longest-running contributor to the satirical magzine. A Reuben Award winner in 2008 and Eisner Hall of Fame recipient in 2013, Jaffee will receive the prestigious Medal of Honor from the National Cartoonists Society in April.
In an interview with Yahoo News, Jaffee describes his creative process, "It's the nature of creative work that as you go along, little bits and pieces become visible to you and you start picturing them. It's almost like the brain is a Google searching tool where you're looking at one thing over here and your brain is searching for things that look like that, that you can integrate with it."
On the official website, in MAD tradition, the "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" creators, including editor-in-chief John Ficarra, previously decided to mark the 92nd milestone in a way that would befit the man. With complete and utter disrespect, notice how the candles on the birthday cake are even talking, joining the argument about how old the artist really is.
When asked why he continues to draw, the Humbug artist answers, ""I'm way beyond retirement age. I'm some 30 years beyond retirement age. Why do I keep working? It gives me pleasure. And I get pleasure also in knowing that I give pleasure. I give pleasure to my readers."
MAD Magazine legend, Al Jaffee, celebrates his 95th birthday this Sunday, March 13th.
We at MStars News wish Jaffee a Happy Birthday!
