"The Americans" S04E01: 'Glanders' Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys Premiere Recap

FX airs the highly anticipated Season 4 premiere of The Americans. In episode 1, Glanders, will Elizabeth (Kerri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) Jennings be able to keep their family safe as they go deeper undercover?

In bed, Philip remembers when he being a young boy and he bashed someone's head in with a rock. Elizabeth turns around and listens to Philip's realization about Martha. He ends up outside Martha's window, watching her sleep. 

After waking her up, Philip reveals to Martha (Alison Wright) how Gene committed suicide, which he staged. Martha cries and bursts into tears, realizing he murdered for her. In the morning, Paige (Holly Taylor) hasn't been able to go sleep. Elizabeth tries to be vague with her daughter, explaining what they do is making the world a safer place.

Martha wakes up and the nightmare continues; she has to go back to work. She's going to be on her own during the investigation. As Stan (Noah Emmerich) gets advice from the new love of his life, Paige is unable to compose herself at school. 

Gabriel (Frank Langella) is upset that the Jennings have lied to him. He's also been holding out on them; there is a mole, William, in their organization. As Nina (Annet Mahendru) gets closer to her contact, Pastor Tim thinks Paige is in danger. He wants her to snitch and find out what her parents do. 

While in disguise, Phillip senses something is wrong when he's out in the streets with Elizabeth. As they undress, Elizabeth thinks he's losing his grip.  At group therapy, Philip reveals he still feels guilty over the boy he killed. He is confessing his feelings with the event. The crowd, including Stan's ex wife, cheers him on for opening up. 

Philip ends up going to the bar with Stan's ex-wife and opens up to her. Stan's new love spots his ex-wife having drinks with Philip. Back on the streets, Philip and Elizabeth circle around their contact, William (Dylan Baker). Unfortunately, Elizabeth spots a suspicious car and thinks they're being tailed.

As Nine becomes more of a friend to her contact, Martha all of a sudden shows up at Clark's apartment. Martha reveals what happened at work after everyone found out about Gene's suicide. Martha wants to know everything even when times get hard. Philip though doesn't want to put her in danger again.

Martha holds his hand and tells her they have to make decisions together. As Philip reveals he needs more info from her, Nina demands  from the warden that she be allowed to see her husband. While her co-workers are talking about Gene's death. Martha is making copies of a secret file. 

As Philip hands Martha's records to Elizabeth, they discover when William is under surveillance. William hands them the vial of a disease, Glanders, which has to be given to Gabriel in 48 hours. 

Stan confronts Philip about his date with his wife.After shaking Philip down, Stan leaves angrily.  Philip wonders if he has been infected with Glanders.
