Weeks away from the release of the last film of the X-Men trilogy, X-Men: Apocalypse, Fox has released a new trailer for their biggest Marvel property, setting the ground for the threequel. In the new footage, further information about the film's big villain, Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac) is revealed, showing his four horsemen -- including Michael Fassbender's Magneto.
In the new trailer, Magneto faces Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) at the School for Gifted Youngsters, asking him whether the idea of someone bursting into the venue to "come for you and your children" doesn't keep him up at night; Professor X responds that he feels "a great deal of pity" for whoever tries something like this.
Throughout the trailer, we are shown glimpses of Apocalypse, while the character is explained to us by the voice of Moira (Rose Byrne): "Some believe that the first mutant was born thousands of years ago. He was some kind of god, and he's going to rise again."
As she says these words, we're shown the moment where Apocalypse wakes up from his millennia of slumber: He's in what appears to be an ancient Egyptian tomb, and someone is performing some serious Mummy magic to have him come back to life. He looks like everyday Isaac at the beginning but, during the ceremony, something around him builds up to give the character its iconic blue appearance.
After being woken up from his centuries of sleep, Apocalypse begins recruiting some of the most powerful mutants for his army: much like the biblical Apocalypse, he always has four Horsemen. In the trailer, it is shown that Magneto, ever concerned with mutant wellbeing, is one of them; he is joined by Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn).
Like one would expect from an almighty mutant villain, Apocalypse's purpose is clear: Cleansing the Earth "for the strongest," which is basically a fancy way of saying it's time to kill all humans and have the world run by mutants alone. For this purpose, he tries to get all mutants on board, calling them his "children" and saying they're all following "blind leaders."
Once Apocalypse is out there, Professor X looks understandably scared, saying he "means to destroy this world, billions of people killed." It seems the professor has gotten a glimpse of Apocalypse's mind through Cerebro, and what he found
In all, Isaac is terrifying as Fox's new Marvel villain, as we're shown images of mutants going up against their own kind, including how Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) are all on Professor X's side -- who also gets overpowered by a gigantic Apocalypse at some point of the trailer.
X-Men: Apocalypse will be in theaters on Memorial Day.
