Much like in real life, political shows on all American networks are currently dealing with the presidential campaign, from Netflix's House of Cards to HBO's comedy, Veep, which is nearing its season 5. In the trailer for the Julia Louis-Dreyfus-led show, Selina Meyer campaigns with the help of John Slattery.
President Meyer is back! In the middle of an increasingly insane real-life presidential campaign, it's a breath of fresh air to see HBO's kookiest politician gearing up for re-election, months after stepping into the Oval Office without even trying. There's still a little over a month until Selina is back on screens and the timing couldn't have possibly been better!
HBO has just released the first trailer for Veep's fifth season and things are as wild around Selina as they always have been. The President's bid for reelection just ended in a tie, which means she now has to go around and "look presidential" while the scores are settled.
Of course, that means new semi-disasters such as bringing the Olympic kayak team to the White House and congratulating them on their gold medal only to realize mid photo shoot that they won bronze instead. Of course, the President's staff continues its long history of incompetence, while Selina has a little fun on the side -- with Mad Men alum Slattery.
Hugh Laurie will also be returning for his second season on the show as Selina's running mate in her current bid for the presidency.
According to Wired, this will mark the first season without original showrunner, Armando Iannucci, who departed the show recently. These days, the man in charge is David Mandel, whose history with HBO includes years of work on Larry David's cult comedy, Curb Your Enthusiasm, so he's bound to give Veep new life these hilariously difficult political times.
Veep season 5 will premiere on HBO next April 24.
