Two of the best characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird and Lance Hunter, have been tapped for their own spinoff series on ABC, and up until this week's S03E013 it was still unclear how exactly that was going to go down as they were still part of Phil Coulson's team. In this recap with spoilers, the MCU just set the ground for its next project: Marvel's Most Wanted!
The latest episode of the show, an obvious preview of the spinoff ahead, is entirely focused on Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) and Hunter (Nick Blood), their relationship and just what makes them great, stressing Hunter's wit and easiness to talk himself out of problems to Bobbi's spy training and knowledge of foreign languages.
The episode, entitled "Parting Shot," occurs on two different times: during the mission to Russia that began last week and hours later, when the two are being interrogated by local authorities and Interpol after killing government officials.
Having reached Russia hitching a ride on the private plane of HYDRA head Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe), Hunter and Bobbi end up on a stakeout of a Russian base where the very evil guy is planning a prison camp for Inhumans at the Eurasian country. During their time out in the snow, Hunter and Mockingbird realize they've never actually been on a holiday together, because the life of a spy isn't exactly filled with fun times.
After pondering whether to take a break from action-filled spy life, the two discover something major: there's a conspiracy going on to assassinate Russian Prime Minister Olshenko (Endre Hules), and the opposing side happens to have a creepy Inhuman General on their side (Kristof Konrad).
The team moves to protect the Russian PM in an action-packed episode. After working behind the scenes to save the politician and killing a few in the process (including the Inhuman and another person who was in the conspiracy), Bobbi and Hunter are interrogated individually.
The Russian government is trying their best to make them spill the beans about a larger secret: Are they still working with S.H.I.E.LD., regarded as a terrorist organization since the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Neither of them will bulge, even when their partner's lives are threatened.
Bobbi and Hunter insist to authorities that they're just on holiday together looking for a very special mushroom that can only be found there and makes for delicious soup. Obviously, nobody believes them.
Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and President Ellis (William Sadler) are trying to smooth things over with the Russians. Coulson actually manages to sneak in for some one-on-one with his two agents, talking about an escape plan -- but won't do it. To protect SHIELD's undercover status, Bobbi and Hunter leave the organization forever and the Russians release them.
Afterwards, the two go up to a bar to reminiscence and make plans. Just when they're about to leave, the waitress starts pouring in drinks from numerous places: it's their team. One by one, they all send drinks their way to toast their departure with the spy's goodbye. Of course, it's Mack (Henry Simmons), their longtime pal, who sheds the most tears, and everyone's silently crying like a trooper.
Now we know: Bobbi and Hunter will be back for the spinoff, fighting off anyone they've annoyed before.
The next episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air next Tuesday on ABC.
