In sad news for anyone who loves smaller and character-based dramedies, Togetherness, the show Mark and Jay Duplass created for HBO and was first released last year, won't be getting a third season. The subscription network has just announced the series, created by the two brothers and starring Mark as Brett Pierson, will end its run after season 2.

According to Deadline, HBO has decided not to renew the show for a third season, citing low ratings as the cause for the show's demise. The news comes in the middle of its second run in the subscription network, as the show had just aired the first five episodes of the season.

The planned season finale episode of the show, "For the Kids," will be serving as its last episode.

The show has built a small but loyal fanbase and received critical acclaim (it has a score of 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 79 on Metacritic), but ultimately this wasn't enough to keep it going on HBO. Unlike other HBO comedies like Emmy-winning Veep and the Lena Dunham-created Girls, the show didn't pick up a larger audience. Its second season has barely averaged 330,000 viewers in HBO's various platforms.

"Although we have decided not to proceed with another season of Togetherness, we look forward to continuing our strong creative collaboration with the talented Jay and Mark Duplass," said HBO in a statement regarding the cancellation of the show.

The Duplass brothers have a contracted larger deal with HBO for multiple projects, among them the animated series Animals.

Togetherness premiered in early 2015 and has been following two couples living under the same roof due to various circumstances; a couple with children whose marriage is crumbling (Duplass and Melanie Lynskey), her sister (Amanda Peet) and his best friend (Steve Zissis). The show deals with the everyday issues in relationships.

Togetherness' final episode will air on HBO on April 10.
