HBO Girls Recap S05E06: Marnie's Marriage to Desi Crumbles As Ex Charlie Reappears [SPOILERS]

This week's episode of HBO's Girls focuses entirely on one of the characters that has been mostly absent from the season: Allison Williams' Marnie. After marrying Desi in the season premiere and randomly reappearing in a couple of episodes since, S05E06 sheds light into her newlywed life -- and how seeing ex-boyfriend Charlie falls into the picture, in this recap with spoilers.

The episode opens with Marnie and Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) silently sitting in bed together. Marnie seems annoyed by his very existence, saying she needs space, which he doesn't agree to because he just loves her too much, which doesn't sound clingy at all.

As Desi calls his new wife "cruel," we find out the reason behind their current spat. She refused to go out for scones with him. Unsurprisingly enough, they're not getting along.

Marnie goes out for a jog and runs into a group of guys who catcall her. Ready to ignore them, she suddenly recognizes one opf them, Charlie Dattolo (Christopher Abbott), her college boyfriend who told her he'd never loved her years back.

Charlie looks different: he's gained weight, a beard and an accent. Unbeknownst to Marnie (although the viewer might find it obvious), he's gained something else: a heroin addiction.

After Charlie reveals the reason he was so mean to her, because his father had killed himself, the two embark on an adventure in the Manhattan night. He buys her a sultry red dress (she rambles on about her life to an uninterested saleswoman when trying it out) and they go out to a very fancy party.

It turns out they're going to the party so Charlie can sell cocaine to a man who assumes Marnie's a prostitute. In a very out-of-character move, Marnie goes along with it and agrees to a threesome, but charges a ridiculous amount. Of course, she bails and uses the money to go out for expensive dinner with Charlie.

The two later go for a romantic boat ride in Central Park, and, of course, they kiss and then fall into the lake. The two then go up to Charlie's place (a dump), decide to escape together and later have sex.

Come morning, Marnie gets a shower and talks to a young woman who just had a downright awful date night, but went through with it anyway because she didn't want to give up on another dream. When Marnie goes back to Charlie's room, she realizes the obvious, there's a heroin kit in his pocket.

Marnie walks away from Charlie's home, not wearing any shoes, and eventually comes home to Desi, who waits in the stairs, and the two know it's all over. Marnie needs to find herself and she can't stand being married to him now.

By the end of the episode, Marnie gets into bed with sleeping Hannah and Fran (Lena Dunham and Jake Lacy), now the second girl in the group who'll go through a divorce.

The next episode of Girls will air on HBO this Sunday.
