The second season of Breaking Bad's spinoff prequel, Better Call Saul, is sadly nearing its end, but it has also continued to be a great show even beyond the footsteps left by its big brother. In this week's S02E07, Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler decide to walk away from their current workplaces into new independent ventures -- but there's a catch, as this recap with spoilers shows!

The episode starts with a history lesson: how young Jimmy (Blake Bertrand) began his career in the rip-off business: when a man cheated Jimmy's dad out of $10, he explained that the world was divided in wolf and sheep. Jimmy then decided his path ... and stole some money from the cashier.

In the present-day, grown Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) takes Mike (Jonathan Banks) to the D.A.'s office to change his statement about Tuco (Raymond Cruz), and the lawyers are pretty convinced Mike was threatened. Still, though on the verge, Mike keeps quiet, not about to tease his fate after taking Hector Salamanca's money --- but his patience is running thick.

As his daughter-in-law Stacey (Kerry Condon) decides on a house, Mike assures her he'll do whatever is necessary to get it. Later, he eyes El Griego Cuinador, the Salamancas' operating post, and it's clear this isn't over.

Meanwhile, Jimmy decides he's had it with Davis & Main, so he asks his pal and assistant, Omar (Omar Maskati), to type out his resignation letter. Omar is pretty shocked that Jimmy wants to leave at all (the apartment, the Mercedes, the perks!) but reminds him of something he obviously didn't remember: if he quits before working there for a whole year, he'll have to give back his bonus check.

Jimmy's way to deal with the issue is straight-up Saul Goodman: he tries to get fired in every possible way, from dressing like an "optical migraine" to refusing to flush and even getting a bagpipe to play in the office. Cliff (Ed Begley Jr.) finally gives in and fires him.

Jimmy happily moves back into his nail salon apartment/office, with new plans on the way.

Jimmy's girlfriend, Kim (Rhea Seehorn) is on the verge of landing a new job at another big firm, and she's trying to set it all up before quitting at Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, but Jimmy makes her an alternate proposal: to make a firm of their own, Wexler-McGill. While Kim likes the idea of being her own boss, she's not too convinced to work with Jimmy if he's going to be "colorful" in his practice -- which obviously, he's planning to do.

In the end, just as she prepares to sign a contract for the new firm, Kim accepts Jimmy's work proposal, but with a twist: same office, different practices, each of them works their way. Jimmy doesn't look too convinced but ends up agreeing anyway; one step closer to becoming Saul.
