Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has reaped huge box office success in its opening week, but reviewers have come down hard on the DC Extended Universe for, among other things, how seriously it takes itself. In an apparent response to the criticism, the next DCEU film, Suicide Squad, is going through reshoots.
According to Birth Movies Death, after fans responded so positively to the amusing trailer (which prominently featured the Queen classic "Bohemian Rhapsody"), Warner Bros. demanded the movie be less serious and more like the trailer.
Fans glimpsed a supervillain meetup in which the bad guys did black ops while being their kooky selves, but director David Ayer's actual film is much more serious in tone. However, that's about to change.
The studio is investing millions into reshoots, which are going on right now, to not just add a few jokes but rather beef up "fun character moments and interactions." However, Umberto Gonzalez from Heroic Hollywood recently tweeted that the reshoots are standard procedure and nothing major about the story, including its tone, is changing.
If the rumors of a more humorous direction are true, it would likely have been weeks ago, so it's not a reaction to Batman v Superman's reception. Still, it fits the general direction critics would like to see the DCEU take.
Days back, James Wan, who will direct the Aquaman stand-alone film, also said his film would be lighter in tone and a lot of fun. With the Wonder Woman shoot well underway and filming for Justice League Part I about to begin, the question of which tone the rest of the franchise will take seems valid.
Suicide Squad hits Aug. 5.
