Last October at the NYC Comic-Con meet and greets, Antony Starr limped his way over to me to talk about the fourth and final season of Cinemax's hit action series, Banshee, which premiere tonight, April 1, 2016, at 10pm ET. I thought I had a great opening question, asking about his leg injury and if he got it on set filming one of the show's many notable action sequences, or possibly a wild sex scene, but it turns out he pulled a muscle doing Yoga! Embarrassed a bit by this, the charming New Zealand native spoke to me about the farewell season of his show, what to expect in the upcoming episodes and more!
Fans of the series know that Starr's character, the man known as Lucas Hood to those around him, has experienced some wild rides, both physically and more so recently, very emotionally. The series turned into one of the more compelling dramas on the network without losing the edge of sex and violence. So how will it all come to an end?
What do you hope fans of Banshee take away from the final season once it all ends?
The end of season three, Lucas was in a giant mess - the whole show was in a giant mess. Job got taken away, and he felt very responsible for that. There's still the "hangover" of Siobhan and the responsibility he felt towards her death. There's a lot of mess and I think that season four is slightly different in tone and much more internalized for Lucas, whereas seasons one through three were about Lucas trying to find his place in the world. This is really about the man trying to find himself and figure out how/why he should live. All the chickens come home to roost, so to speak. It's very much and internal, intense journey for Lucas to try and save his soul, really.
So as far as what anyone can take away from that, I hope that we leave it with some kind of hopeful message. But it's one of those things where I know the ending, I know what happens, and some people are going to be very disappointed and some people are going to be very happy. Overall, I hope that the fans feel that we came up with a good ending for the show.
What can you share about the Eliza Dushku's character and her addition to the series?
She inserts herself in the middle of a story and presents a number of problems, particularly for Lucas. She's a very forceful character and Lucas is not someone who likes being pushed around much, so there's naturally going to be some conflict and tension there. An interesting dynamic develops between the two.
Will we get to see any more about Lucas' past in flashbacks?
One of the ways that the show is structured is that we tend to drop ourselves in the middle of stories, and then we'll explain piece by piece through flashbacks. So yeah, there are some flashbacks that come up. We definitely revisit the past of certain characters and it's really interesting to learn about characters and their backstories through that device.
Make sure to tune in to Cinemax tonight at 10pm ET for the season four premiere of Banshee.
