The eighteenth episode of Arrow Season 4 finally revealed who is in the grave that Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is facing in last year's teasers: Laurel Lance. Although it seemed quite obvious that Katie Cassidy's character has finally met her demise in "Eleven Fifty-Nine," fans still can't help but wonder if the Black Canary is really dead or if she will be resurrected any time soon. Luckily, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim has the answer!
Guggenheim recently spoke to ComicBook.com and several other outlets about the possibility of Laurel coming back to life.
"No, no. We've done that," he immediately said. "We've done a fake death before."
Sure, Arrow has done that probably more than half a dozen times. There was Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), Thea Queen (Willa Holland), Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) and even Oliver himself. The only characters that have appeared permanently dead so far are Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell) and Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Although there is still a possibility that the two characters will make an appearance in future episodes (but who knows?).
Nevertheless, Guggenheim insists that Black Canary will not magically come back to life (but maybe only because Katrina Law's Nyssa al Ghul has already destroyed the Lazarus Pit). The EP stated that the show tried to find a creative way to effectively kill Laurel off.
"That's the thing, it's like we're always you know trying to figure out, 'What's the way to do this?'" he said, stating that Laurel's recovery and sudden death was an effort to give the character her own different demise (although it only seemed to give her and the fans some unnecessary prolonged agony).
"You know that fake out when she was okay and then she wasn't, was again our attempt, you know?" Guggenheim said. "How do we do a death that we haven't done before?"
