The Americans Season 4 Spoilers: Twitter Reacts Annet Mahendru/Nina Sergeevna Krilova Twist!

Season 4 of The Americans continues on FX. While spies Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) were on their own mission, Twitter had lots to say about Nina Sergeevna Krilova (Annet Mahendru) and her shocking twist!

In our recent recap, Elizabeth and Philip were quarantined with Gabriel (Frank Langella), thinking they were infected with the Glanders disease. As the hours passed, Elizabeth fell ill to the antibiotics. Free from the infection,the two were able to return home to kids. After being transferred from her prison cell, Nina learned her appeal was revoked and her death sentence was granted. Right then and there, Nina was shot in the back of the head by a prison guard.

In an interview with Variety, co-showrunner Joel Fields reveals why Nina had to die, "A big part of the story we wanted to tell, and it's a story that Joe and I have been plotting out over the course of the series, was that she's changed. This is a person who is finally realizing that the process of sacrificing others for herself, putting her own survival first, had gotten her to a certain place, but it wasn't the way she wanted to live anymore. She was opening herself up to being a different kind of person. She gets the transformation that comes with that, and she unfortunately pays the price that comes with that, given her circumstances."
