FX continues with the Season 4 premiere of The Americans. In episode 4, Chloramphenicol, will Elizabeth (Kerri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) Jennings be able to keep their family safe as they go deeper undercover?
Elizabeth makes a call, warning the Center that the delivery is unsafe. She then calls Paige (Holly Taylor), who is a complete wreck, and asks her to watch over Henry. William (Dylan Baker) then cuts off the line and sanitizes the phone booth.
Knowing they should be in a hospital. William wants everyone, including Gabriel (Frank Langella), to wear gloves and use paper towels. Gabriel doesn't look too good though as he lies sick on the sofa.
Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) tells the story how he first met his wife. Henry reveals his folks are never home and he can't talk to his father about girls. Paige keeps telling the lie to Stan and tries to stay cool around him.
As they discuss death, Elizabeth and Philip wonder if their daughter knows they really love her. Do they have a choice with Pastor Tim hough? Back at work, Martha (Alison Wright) finds herself being asked out nd interrogated by a fellow agent.
William finds it ironic Philip and Elizabeth that they're worried for their son's biology test. He discovers Elizabeth is feeling sick from the antibiotics. Martha makes a call to Clark, hoping he gets her message. Philip then finds Elizabeth puking in the bathroom. If things go bad, Philip should keep the truth from Henry and Paige should blame her for Pastor Tim's death.
While Martha is on her date, Stan breaks into her apartment and goes through her belongings, taking photographs. Martha reveals she's dating a married man as Stan finds a gun in her drawer. Stan finds the Karma Sutra as Martha admits to having an honest relationship with a marred man.
During the night, Elizabeth is drenched in sweat as she remember staking care of her sick mother. Elizabeth wakes up wants to call Paige but Philip stops her. Elsewhere, Nina (Annet Mahendru) stares at her empty prison cell but cannot sleep; no help is coming her way. William check up on Elizabeth's fever, which has broke, but that doesn't mean she's fine.
William and Philip have a talk about Paige; they're a family that's never around. William confesses nobody sane would do this work. Philip is only normal when he's with Elizabeth.
As William checks up on Gabriel, Elizabeth doesn't have the disease, she just hd a bd reaction to the antibiotics. Elizabeth realizes they shouldn't run; they should work on Tim and Alice. With their safe house compromised, William intends on sticking around with Gabriel.
Refusing to murder Tim and Alice, Philip and Elizabeth tell Gabriel there is another way. It is not an easy way to live if you know you will aways be hunted. If they protect Pastor Tim, the parents have to let Paige go and let the Center recruit their daughter.
As the Jennings family goes bowling, Nina will receive the death sentence. She is then shot in the back of the head.
