After being on the writing team for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller is coming back to the U.S.S. Enterprise franchise, teaming up with CBS to create a new series set in its universe. In the latest news from the still-untitled project, the timelines have been revealed -- where in the continuity does the show fall?
Birth Movies Death reports that Fuller will be following the example set by Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story, and instead of creating a sole timeline for his upcoming Star Trek series, it will in fact be an anthology in different time frames -- and it'll have nothing to do with J.J. Abrams' rebooted universe.
In all, the movies will continue to exist on a different dimension as the TV iteration of the Star Trek universe.
It seems the first season of the upcoming show could happen between The Original Series and The Next Generation, but after that the entire pre-reboot universe is up for grabs when it comes to writers. Speaking of which, Slash Film reports that, aside from Fuller, there's another behind-the-scenes Star Trek alum involved in the upcoming series: Nicholas Meyer, who directed Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country, will be writing and producing.
In other possible news about the exciting series, there's one thing different about the upcoming series: it won't actually be set on the U.S.S. Enterprise, but rather introduce a whole new starship. Even better: though the show will follow past series/movies continuity including the "Khitomer Conference" in which humans and Klingons reach peace, the alien race could still be villains in some way or another!
So far, neither CBS nor Fuller's team in the show has confirmed any of these rumors, but it's definitely still something to look forward to, as the franchise turns 50 this year.
Aside from the upcoming series, set to make its début in early 2017 as an All Access streaming exclusive, Abrams' rebooted/parallel universe is getting its third installment with Star Trek Beyond this summer.
