Days after it was revealed that Creed actress Tessa Thompson would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 in next year's superhero sequel Thor: Ragnarok, the first rumors about her character have begun to spring about, and she could be playing a major one -- an Asgardian, no less!
Sources close to the Chris Hemsworth-led sequel recently told Latino Review that Thompson, whose role had been originally called "a kind of superhero [who] will appear in other Marvel films," will in fact be playing Asgardian superhero Valkyrie. In the comic books, Odin chooses the character, also known as Brunhilde, to lead the Valkyrie and select those who go to Valhalla.
If this rumor is true, it could mean Thompson will be facing Josh Brolin's Thanos alongside the Avengers by the end of Phase 3. Days back, Russo brothers, who will be directing the two-part Avengers: Infinity War movies, revealed that Ragnarok will see the beginning of the major galactic conflict.
Also starring in Ragnarok are Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk and Cate Blanchett as a new villainous character, who has remained unnamed so far. Rumor has it she'll be playing Hela, the Asgardian goddess of Death, a character that in turn could be serving a much larger purpose: connecting Asgard to super-villain Thanos, as she could be the MCU version of the personification of Death that the super-villain is so obsessed with.
So far, there have been glimpses at the existence of magic within the MCU, like how Thor told Jane Foster in the first film that in Asgard science and magic were "one and the same," but concepts like a personification of Death are way beyond the MCU's league as it is today. It won't be until later this year that magic's potential will be revealed with Doctor Strange, which will see Benedict Cumberbatch take on the role of the Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.
The film, which will explore concepts already introduced in Ant-Man and the second season of Agent Carter, could also introduce a new Infinity Stone, as there are still two left to go. In all, Strange and Ragnarok will apparently be the films that finally link magic, science and what's happening in the cosmos to the Earth-bound logic of the Avengers movies so far.
Thor: Ragnarok will premiere on Nov. 3, 2017.
